We made the 2-hour drive to Monterey/Carmel and back in just a day, and it was one of our favorite activities on our week-long trip. We first drove the 17 Mile Drive back in 2009 when we were visiting Noah’s sister in San Francisco. No wonder they’ve got the funds to maintain it! Can be done from Monterey to Carmel or vice versa… I follow the coast road from from Monterey, through Pacific Grove, Lovers point, play Country Roads where John Denver died, Point Pinos light house, lovely round of golf at the Pacific Grove Golf course, the monarch sanctuary if it’s winter, tide pools at Asilomar, enter the Spanish Bay gate, and if you time it right hang out for drinks at the hotel while watching the Scottish piper play (if you buy something you get your gate money back), follow 17 mile drive, stop at the Restless Sea to see really cool criss cross wave (if the weather cooperates), stop at Seal Rock to see the birds and sea lions, stop at fanshell beach to hopefully see a harbor seal or otter, lone cypress, ghost tree, the house from Escape to Witch Mountain is visible from Ghost Tree, stop at the Lodge and check out the shops, get a drink from Stillwater or Kobe burger with Brie and truffle fries from the Tap Room (across the hall but no view), and exit at the Carmel gate and take Scenic Rd, see a house designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, see Butterfly House, see Carmel River Bech, keep going.… Mission Ranch, Carmel Mission, Big Sur. Great for when you are a tourist of have out of town friends who want to be tourists.
